Who we are:

First of all, I'm a huge fan of Investor's Business Daily and its publisher William O'Neil. I've subscribed to the newspaper since the late 80's and bought the first edition of his book, "How to Make Money in Stocks" the day it hit the bookstores, sometime in 1988 I think.

O'Neil's CANSLIM method of picking stocks is the result of scanning many years of stock market data and observing which factors successful companies had in common. By successful, O'Neil means a stock that goes up 3, 4, or 5 times in price over a relatively short time period.

The newspaper is an invaluable resource but the online site www.investors.com makes scanning the market even easier. In particular, the "Screen of the Day" section that presents a list of stocks with outstanding characteristics based on CANSLIM indicators makes identifying good potential investments even easier than scanning the newspaper.

But they went even further by making the list downloadable into an Excel spreadsheet! The spreadsheet has far more data than what appears on the web site including most of the CANSLIM indicators each day. There is a different set of screening criteria each day and about a dozen unique screens in all.

I've been downloading these screens since I discovered the feature about a year ago. I have quite a collection of them and had often wished I could somehow make them even more useful. For example, if a stock looked interesting, I would like to know if that stock had shown up in any of the other screens. I would load up each screen and look through it for the symbol, a very time-consuming process. I also noticed that I lost the hyper link to investors.com to get a quote and do a stock checkup.

Sitting there one night I decided that since I've been programming computers for more than 30 years I could probably do something about this. After a good many nights and weekends the program has taken shape and I like what it does. So, with the help of my son who's a web developer, we are going to find out if anyone else out there thinks that this makes IBD even more useful.

As you can see on other parts of the site, we are looking for beta testers to help us shake out minor bugs and improve the program. If you are an IBD subscriber and have Excel 97 or Excel 2000  we invite you to join us in this effort. In return we will grant you a free license to use the program after it is released. We look forward to hearing from you.
